So,
We got a Bronze.
Though not what we wanted, not what we hoped for, but we DID try our best.
And that is enough.
We tried our best and we got a medal, and I think that's fine.
The day where we got our scores for Danse Diabolique, we all thought it was so diffucult and were blaming Mr Tan for choosing such a song.
But as the days passed and we practiced very hard for it, we can all run the notes properly now, don't we!
We survive through the torturings, all the comments and insults, and Mr Tan's auditions!
We've worked very hard to come to this stage.
We've put in hard work and effort and we should be proud of it.
Tomorrow, when the result is announced to the whole school, we shall be proud and not hide our faces just because it's a Bronze.
There are many people in school from other CCAs that are insulting us, (I've met a few msyelf),
but we have put in our best for the SYF, so why be bothered by them?
People are saying about our SYF results, saying that it's crap and all, but we know we did our best, the band knows we tried our best, it's enough. Don't care about them.
We should be proud of ourselves, we went up on stage, performed, and came down.
Anyway, we are much high-class than them, cos we know MUSIC and they don't. LOL

Take a good rest, and we shall all return to band after a short break for POP and proceed on to teaching the juniors!
'Saxophone section has always been very stong' says Mr Tan.
And we will prove to him that we are strong too. :D

Okay, it's only 17 more days to SYF.
Let's give in our best for it kay.
I know it isn't easy playing and playing the same thing over and over again for a few months,
but we're doing this because we want our SILVER, don't we?
Work hard during this short March holiday break,
I know you might feel very tired and want to pon band, but persevere !
don't slack, don't play a fool during combined.
Observe all the things that Mr Tan has mentioned
like dynamics, tone and stuffs
Like what Mr Tan sais yesterday,
BRONZE to SILVER is a huge leap, a huge gap,
whereas Silver to Gold is a smaller leap.
So, we have to put in tons and tons of effort to get the SILVER that we want.
I know combined with Mr Tan can be boring when he does those breathing and dynamics (?)exercises,
but we are all doing this for the Silver that we want.
So don't slack.
Breathe eight counts means breathe eight counts, and not only breathing for four counts.
piano means piano and not HALFWAY of mp and p
forte means forte and not HALFWAY of mf and f
It's these kind of small little things that we don't pay attention that make us still a bronze band and not silver.
Take note of these things, even though they might seem not important to you,
but it all counts into our marks when they jugde us.

Articulation is very very very super important for Danse
and remember not to slow down for Danse too
it is very easy for us to slow down but very very super damn difficult for us to go back to the original tempo again, unless the percussion does it.

and don't get fustrated over what happen that day, it's over.
we should take that as a lesson and learn from it. (:

i think that they're sHh0 kAwAiixzx. but poor adelin wont get her shuai guy junior which is probs her dream junior. i think she either wants to a) stare at him or b) break the bassoonists-are-all-girls tradition.

I WANT JUNIORS!
so fun. can teach them stuff, pump them, make them run rounds, etc etc. FUN.

last day of 2008.. few hours more to 2009.

didnt get to know you goons (LOL) til we're sec3, and we're super proud of you all, now that you all are coping quite well without us. you all improved a lot since the last time we saw you people, and at least we know that saxophone section wont fall. but there's always room for improvement! i wont go to all the technical details la. must really practice hard for syf okay? by setting an example, other sections will see how hardworking you guys are, and they'll also start to work hard, and then syf time we'll get that silver the dumb judges took away from us!

2009 also means people like mel, adelin, qianyu and gina are in upper sec now. UPPER SEC. (: palit and lingchao wont be there forever, you guys need to step up and take abit of responsibility now. make it a point to practice and teach the new sec1s diligently! adelin, cannot be playful le. although you've become less playful over the years :D

during syf, you'll find yourself having butterflies in your stomach, and you'll actually break into cold sweat. once you heard the bands before you, you'll start to wonder whether you can get that silver. the singapore conference hall is quite cold btw. but if youve really done your homework and do what mr tan or even palit ask you all to do, you'll be fine!

remember, when youre on stage,
play as if youre the best player in the world.

but when youre practising,
play as if youre the worst.

remember your scales and appregios and intervals and techniques.
practice them, having a solid foundation will be useful later.
practice tonal quality and pour emotion into your sound, characterizing them (this is something eugene managed to do but not me, hahaa. so thats why i wna practice, but no tenor zz)
no matter how good your techniques are, they wouldnt be good if you dont have a good tone and sound. just listen to the sax solos i posted on this blog. eugene's sound can match them, hands down. wenlong and mel, practice til you have the tone quality of eugene. gina and khidhir, dont practise til you get my tone, it sucks haha

point is, be diligent! do it for us! we are the SAX section, we ROCK YEAH

Boo! yeah Boo!! hehe. im suppose to be in sch doing sectionals. lol. later then go. im getting tired of going yio chu kang :DD

okay yah. the VJC concert like damn cool lah!! they played this song which i remembered playing it with sum of my yuhua sec friends. haha. i didnt beleive i would have missed the first part and we did! WTF!? i wanna hear March Blue Sky! its like a bloody nice marching song(at least more lively than Grand March). i spent 1 and a half hours of my life just to go there!! we took 13. like wtf! haha. but overall i like all the songs bahs. Leonard Tan is damn Cool and Funny. And he is TALL! omg! But the seating SUCKS! is like all full already!! me, daniel and wengsun had to like sit on the STEPS! lol. and elias was like "Why you all never cheer for me!?". lol. i was thinking about saying that if Adelin and Michelle were here they would be screaming already? haha.

Last Sectionals were kinda lame but fun. The Saxes and The Flutes started talking about Taiwan, Hong Kong, China all these places. they were like talking about shopping all. LOL.

My maple chracter in Eridanus Hunter Level 40 already!! wheee! i chiong 4 Levels in one day(3hours) and chiong another 2 levels to get Level 40 the nest day(in 2 and a half hours). haha. Alll thanks to Monster Carnival!! :D those who got maple character in Eridanus. add me okayy!?

list of must learn pieces for saxophones

altos
animation medley - soprano sax solo
i need to be in love
symphonic overture, the emo part
first love - addicted to you
jap graf XI
scootin' - the crazy part
flight of the bumblebee

tenors
basically the same thing as altos plus:
ballad for tenor sax (this can get boring, but trains tone)
carnival of venice (transposed from euphonium)
psatha's jazz concerto (it sounds like shit, but technique-wise its damn imba)
frame for the blues

bari
scootin' - i no need tell you which part
passion of the christ - if you can master just the 1st movement i call you pro
carnival of venice
third symphony? just for novelty's sake haha

basically all saxes should learn carnival of venice and flight of bumblebee.
tenor can play the alto pieces, but it just doesnt make sense for bari to play alto pieces. its too low haahah.

tenors have an advantage because if tenors play alto pieces on the original key, they have a chance to go altissimo range. makes you practice altissimo. if not just play according to alto score in the tenor. different key, but still will do.

for bari, just the carnival of venice makes you imba. youre required to triple tongue. single tongue for carnival also can, it trains the speed of your tongueing. imagine tongueing staccatos on triplets at 180bpm. there's a bari solo in passion of christ that allows the bari to go up to high F#.

go youtube to check the pieces bah. i think all should have, especially for alto. the alto pieces are like damn common.

OMG! OMG! OMG!! Elias!! you should have came for todays practise(29th November 08)! like we had sectionals and our section, the clarinets and the flutes section were playing the set piece, Danse Diabolique, Challenge The Sky And Heavens Above and Blue Ridge Saga! like cool. then Mr Tan called us out. then the Woodwinds, together with the Trombones. Euphonium, Tubas and Percussion were playing Overture Number 1 For Wind Band!! like FIRST TIME! We played like damn nice!! is like Bronze almost to Silver Standard! Mr Tan said we did well!! Gratz to Everyone who did well during tht combined!! stay tht way and improve much more if possible!! Jiayou!! :DD

things to do for december sectionals :-
- develop a nicer and better sound
- keep track of timing, always have the subdivisions in your head (im dead serious)
- blend with the band, you all are doing support most of the time
- dont panic when you see running notes, take things slow, and slowly go faster
- dont go around thinking since you can run the notes fast you can slack. play the running notes slow and be amazed by how many mistakes can you make.
- ALWAYS breathe at least 2 counts earlier
- altos, play your sound just above the horns. tenors, play your sound just above the euphoniums. bari&bassoon, play your sound above the tuba. SUPPORT. not solo.
- have one eye on the score, one eye ON THE CONDUCTOR, one ear on your own sound, one ear on the whole band and relevant instruments.
- dont slow down in the later parts of danse. always look at the conductor.
- dont be fooled by the apparent easiness of overture no.1. it was one of the hardest pieces i played. not in terms of technicality. as a whole. tenors will definitely go flat when you play your B and F, be careful. altos, play out your semi quavers with confidence.
- when the piece tells you to go piano, GO SOFT. vice versa for forte. GO LOUD. when i say play loud doesnt mean play until blasting. thats using the embrochure to play loud. use air. LOADS of air. then you'll get the full saxophone sound.
- watch out for staccatos and accents and all. its important.
- Prof. Kelly Tang had set up several traps in overture 1. change of key, circle of fifths melody, and contrast in dynamics are some of the ones that had been identified. there's more. dont be arrogant and be careful.
- finally, have confidence in your ability, but dont be complacent. there's a subtle difference.

this is all i can actually think of and help you guys for the coming competition. you musnt think that since there are 100+ days to syf, there's still time. think. its not everyday you have band practice. if say there's 3 practices a week. 121 days to syf to be exact. 121/7= 17 weeks. 17 x 3 = 51 practices. add in the exchanges and the rough number of practices youre probably gna miss or pon and the number whittles down. and these practices does not include full time sectionals. very soon april's gonna arrive. have the sense of urgency there. we missed a silver by a hair last time and it was heartbreaking. this is not only confined to you all but the whole band.

remember the 5 Ps:
Present
Punctual
Pencil
Practice
Passion

be Present for all practices. be Punctual so that time can be efficiently managed. bring a Pencil to note down anything important. Practice makes it perfect. and have Passion in what youre doing. if you dont have the last P, then you might as well kiss the silver goodbye. only in Passion can you find enjoyment in your music.

and of course, have some fun! (:
when you finally felt that you have done as much as work as possible in one day, play something nice to relax. but that is not an excuse to slack.

saxes have an important job. they serve as a link between woodwinds and brasses.
bassoon's job is to provide the reed sound together with oboe. dont think youre insignificant. you must lie above the tuba sound so as to bring out the colour of the bassoon. that is, just play slightly louder than the tuba. listen to him, and blend with him.

things to do for december sectionals :-
- set alarm earlier [for regular late people aka khidhir & at times adelin]
- wake up when your alarm rings
- dont press the snooze button
- run for the bus/train if you're late so you can get to school faster = people who arrive earlier wont get bored waiting for you
- get a book in case you're bored during sectionals

heyy people. today is the 1st day of the month. and you knoe waht? is Hari Raya today!(: so yeah. just because its holiday dosen mean we can rest and relax. we still have to study for exam. ill be getting green packets filled with money. yay!(: haha. and after exam we can rest and relax all we want. and after exams, band resumes. like finally! :D

bye people. im goin to my relatives house to get green packets. and one good thing is that i don have to fast anymore till next year!(:

sax section 2005 - april 13, syf. before sherri joins.

sax section 2005 - seniors graduated, after sherri joins.

current sec4s 2006 - when we're sec 2.

sax section 2006 - wenlong joins.

razzmatazz 2006 - 4 current sec 4s plus guiyu.

sinyi's birthday 2007 - the 4 of us again. (:

farewell function 2007 - full sax section, adelin gina melissa joins. where's qianyu? lol

arise, shine! 2008 - full sax section, khidhir joins, final performance for us.

so as you can see, saxophone section is steeped with history.
as i post all these pictures, deep nostalgia sets in.
4 more days to graduation.. its like only yesterday when i remember eugene raising his hand telling mr tan he plays the saxophone.
and then me and eugene, after syf '05, sorta made fun of sherri and sixuan.
sixuan had a hell of a time playing bassoon. hhaa
i also remember me playing bari.. hahaha though unpleasant, it was a good learning experience.
pop, razzamatazz, symphonie II..
then syf '07.. though bronze, it was okay.
for you people going through syf next year, get back that silver okay!hahaha.
then sec1 orientation '08.. and ariseshine concert.
and 4 years finally ends.
